Constructive Critique
May 14 2024Caffeinated Thought of the Week:
Correcting someone is tough! How can we ensure that the person leaves the conversation feeling better than when they started?
We must begin with the end in mind.
The end result to strive for is to:
- Grow the Relationship
- Gain Momentum in the right direction
- Foster a commitment to long-term improvement
We must have the conversation in a way where the other person feels loved, believed in, and hopeful about the future. Of course, it’s easier said than done!
Quote of the Week:
“Correction does much, but encouragement does more.” - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Reflection of the Week:
Imagine you are a sports coach, and you notice one of your players consistently making the same mistake during practice. Using the above principles, how would you approach the situation?
Instead of harshly criticizing them, you pull them aside and say, “I’ve noticed you’re struggling with [specific skill]. I believe in you, and with [provide specific suggestions], you’ll get there. This won’t happen overnight, but we will work on it together.”
