Autonomy, Complexity and Relationship between Effort and Reward
January 2, 2024Caffeinated Thought of the Week:
In the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell uses stories from an apron business owner to The Beatles to show how work needs three qualities to be satisfying and fulfilling.
- Autonomy - Are you given some control to make decisions on your own?
- Complexity - Are you challenged?
- Relationship between Effort and Reward - There has to be some way to track progress or to define success.
Quote of the Week:
“Hard work is a prison sentence only if it does not have meaning. Once it does, it becomes the kind of thing that makes you grab your wife around the waist and dance a jig.” - Malcolm Gladwell from Outliers
Reflection of the Week:
What are you currently doing for “work”? - student, church coordinator, music instructor, engineer, food broker, athlete
Are there Gladwell’s three aspects to your work? If not, what needs to change to find this in your current role?
