Motivation Gets You Going, Discipline Keeps You Growing

February 11 2025

Caffeinated Thought of the Week:

I love a good motivational video, speech, or song but it’s short-term. You can’t listen to Tim Tebow’s The Promise all day. That’s where discipline comes into play. It digs into the heart of the matter:

“I want to be a person who _____, so I need to do XYZ.”

Motivation is the ignition flame, but discipline is the wood that keeps the fire going.

Fitness:

  • Motivation: Watching a Rocky movie or listening to a hype song before hitting the gym.
  • Discipline: Sticking to a workout schedule, staying hydrated, prioritizing sleep, moving daily, and eating fresh, nutritious foods.
  • Mindset: “I want to be a person who is strong and healthy, so I need to work out, fuel my body well, and prioritize rest.”

Following Jesus:

  • Motivation: A moving sermon, a worship song, or a testimony that stirs your faith.
  • Discipline: Daily time in scripture, consistent prayer, and surrounding yourself with a strong faith community.
  • Mindset: “I want to be a person who follows Jesus wholeheartedly, so I need to stay in His Word, seek Him daily, and live out my faith in action.”

Quote of the Week:

“Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most.” - Abraham Lincoln

Challenge of the Week:

What type of person are you working to become? How can you add both motivation and discipline to get you there?
