Stockdale Paradox

Caffeinated Thought of the Week:

Jim Collins in his book “Good to Great”, discusses what separates good companies from great ones.  One crucial factor he highlights is the ability to “Confront The Brutal Facts (Yet Never Lose Faith).”  Collins developed what is known as the Stockdale Paradox based on Admiral James Stockdale a Navy pilot and prisoner of war during the Vietnam War who was held captive in Hanoi from 1965-1973.  The Stockdale Paradox states, “Retain faith that you will prevail in the end, regardless of the difficulties.  And at the same time confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.”

3 Steps to Live the Stockdale Paradox Every Day:

  1. Accept Your Circumstances
  2. Take Control of Your Mindset
  3. Attack the Problem Head-on and Have Faith

“I never doubted not only that I would get out, but also that I would prevail in the end and turn the experience into the defining event of my life, which, in retrospect, I would not trade.” - Admiral James Stockdale
