Lead with Context
April 16, 2024Caffeinated Thought of the Week:
The author of The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, wrote: “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” He emphasized the importance of providing context and vision before starting a task, to inspire people to be part of it.
Quote of the Week:
“Lead with context, not control.” - Reed Hastings
Reflection of the Week:
Casting a compelling vision is important for tasks big and small:
- Baking a meal: Share how delicious it will be, then invite friends to cook together.
- Moving furniture: Explain the new layout first, before directing the moves.
- Basketball practice: Motivate players with the goal of championship level endurance before running conditioning drills.
